Tio Manuel - Rest In Peace

July 2nd, 2008

I’ve been wanting to kick off a new entry, but procrastination has had the best of me. That is, until my Uncle Manny kicked me in the butt.

I posted this on the main page of the site a few weeks ago. I read this at the funeral and I was asked my some family members to re-post it. Well, here it is…

It’s been a few weeks since I last wrote down some of my thoughts. Things have been very challenging over the past month.

I will be traveling to Albuquerque, New Mexico this week for a funeral. Funerals are bitter sweet. We get together to mourn the loss of our dear friend or family member who left us. Funerals bring together family and friends and give us the chance to remember our recently deceased.

It’s been several years since we had a death in the family. This funeral is bringing together family from all across the country. I am saddened by the reason for this gathering, but also excited to see the many relatives I haven’t seen in far too long.

My “Tio” Manuel was a prankster. He was always telling jokes and getting people to smile & laugh. Many times his comments would elicit a frown or the stirrings of anger till you noticed the big smile on his face letting you know he was just kidding around.

For those who knew him, we knew to take his comments in stride. For those who didn’t know him, many expressions of confusion & uncertainty would cross their faces until they realized Manny was just pushing their buttons.

He loved to “shock” people. Whether it was from his crass comments combined with colorful language or things like walking around with syringes sticking out of his belly for all to see.

My uncle loved family gatherings. He loved to see the smiles on peoples faces. He loved making new friends anywhere he went. Even when he had trouble walking, he would take his motorized scooter and venture all around the neighborhood talking to everyone he met.

“Tio” Manuel was an interesting guy to talk to. He had many great stories to tell too. No matter what you were speaking about, he always had an opinion. That opinion was the one that would elicit the most controversy too.

I look fondly over the time I spent with him. I know he’d be excited and happy to see all the family who gather in his honor. We love you Tio Manuel.

Now there are Dance Exchanges all across the country and around the world, but my favorite of all is hosted by the crew in Las Vegas.

So lets combine the happy, go lucky exhilaration of swing dancing and combine it with the glitz and glamour of Las Vegas and we have a wonderful weekend of madness known as the Vegas eXchange.

Who needs an excuse to go to Las Vegas? No one, but combine that (non-excuse) with Swing Dancing and you have the icing on the cake. Everyone LOVES cake! Last year was a hoot. This year my kid brother turns 21. We are going to have a ball.

I encourage you to plan ahead. The earlier you plan your trip, the more money you will have for drinks & slot machines. Check out the flight & hotel prices at: www.TofuTravel.com

The cost for the Vegas eXchange Package is only $25 if you register before September. It bumps up to $30 on September 1, 2008. You can also purchase your weekend ticket at the door for $35. If you’d like to pay on a per night basis, that’ll cost you $20 per night.

Remember to register early to ensure your spot. I look forward to seeing you on the dance floor.

Oh, the Memories…

When I started swing dancing, we would travel all the way to Tustin to a club called Memories. It was a long drive from Hollywood, but they had dancing on the weekends till 5am in the morning.

That location no longer exists, but the management has resurrected the Memories Dance Venue in Uptown Whittier. Memories is a great place to go swing dancing with friends and to make new ones on the dance floor. Memories is open for swing dancing on Monday & Friday nights.

They have a great dance floor as well as a full bar and a stage for live bands. If you’re new to swing dancing, or would like to brush up on some steps, there are also dance lessons held upstairs on Mondays, Tuesday & Fridays.

Dancing at Memories is a bargain. Mondays are only $3 and Fridays are $8 (unless there is a LIVE band). On Fridays, and extra $2 hooks you up with the dance lesson.

For more information on Memories Swing events, scheduled DJ’s & dance lessons, check out the Memories Website: www.MemoriesDancing.com

Put your dance shoes on and be sure to visit Memories soon. You’ll be glad you did.

Quite a few years ago, I was invited to a birthday dinner. We were headed to Ed Debevic’s Restaurant on La Cienaga Boulevard. To our chagrin, when we pulled up to Ed Debevic’s parking lot, we found out it was closed. I remembered passing The Stinking Rose a few few blocks before, so I suggested we move the party to The Stinking Rose. It was the best decision ever.

Garlic MartiniThis is a restaurant for garlic lovers. The Stinking Rose jests that they “season their garlic with food”. I’d say 95% of the menu has garlic as an ingredient. They even have Garlic Wine, Garlic Martinis & Garlic Ice Cream.

Be sure to try the Bagna Calda as an appetizer. It’s a iron skillet filled with oven roasted garlic cloves bathed in olive oil. Spread it like butter onto the house focaccia bread. It’s absolutely tantalizing. So much so, you’ll need another taste, and another… and another… If you’re daring, sample the garlic relish. (It can usually be found on your table). I tend to alternate between both the garlic relish and the bagna calda as I sip my wine and await my order. Sometimes, I even put both on my focaccia. (Boy, can I be a rebel).

I recommend meeting your best friends for a meal here. You’ll have a scrumptious Garlic laden experience (and they can’t make fun of you for smelling like garlic). I love organizing large dinner parties at The Stinking Rose. This is also a great place for a romantic meal with that special person. Mmmmm… Garlic breath.

If you’re not fond of garlic, you can choose a dish with a vampire next to it. If you’re a vegetarian, choose an item with a red tomato next to the entree.

Whenever I am in San Francisco, I make it a point to visit Millennium Restaurant. I originally found the restaurant in the phonebook under the vegetarian listings. On a whim, I went there for dinner. I was so impressed with dinner, I returned for breakfast & lunch later that weekend. The atmosphere is elegant. They have a large wine selection which perfectly compliments their ever-changing menu. This is the perfect restaurant for a romantic evening.

Many of Millennium’s entrees are seasonally based, so you’re always in for a pleasant surprise. I tend to ask the server about their daily specials. I’ve never been disappointed.

Everything on the menu is vegetarian, and if you love gourmet food, Millennium will become one of your favorite restaurants as well.

How did I discover the vegetarian Fast Food Restaurant in Pasadena called Orean’s Health Express? About 10 years ago I was visiting an eclectic store in Alhambra Called Pinxit. A flyer was left on my car for a vegetarian restaurant next to McDonald’s. I was intrigued, so I drove up to Pasadena to check it out. I sampled a (non-dairy) shake and (vegetarian) Chicken Burger. I was pleasantly surprised. To this day, I will go out of my way to grab a peanut butter & carob shake (sounds weird, but is absolutely yummy).

When you visit Orean’s Health Express, be sure to try the Chicken Burger. I also like the African Tostada and the Philly Cheese with Peppers & Grilled Onions. My sister loves the Chili Cheese Fries and the Tamale.

The shakes & “ice cream” are dairy free, so if you’re lactose intolerant, but crave a shake, you need to try one of these. I’d have to say the straws they give you with their shakes are a bit too thin for the thick consistency of the shake. I sometimes grab a straw from across the street at the golden arches. (I like their straws better). The shakes come in the basic flavors; Vanilla, Strawberry & Carob (chocolate). If you’re feeling exotic, order the Chai or Cappacino flavor, and if you’re feeling adventurous, ask for a Peanut Butter & Carob shake. Yummy!

Everything on Orean’s menu is vegetarian. It’s a little pricier than McDonald’s across the street, but I’d bet it’s a lot healthier.

When you’re out in Pasadena drop on by. Orean’s Fast Food Restaurant is on Lake Avenue (north of the 210 Freeway). It’s directly across Lake Avenue from Roscoe’s Chicken and Waffles and on the same side of the street as McDonald’s.

If you’re in a hurry, call your order in ahead of time, but if you have some time to enjoy your meal use the walk-up window. Everything is made to order, so the food takes a bit longer than the average fast food joint. When you’re waiting, just remember that saying from childhood, “good things come to those who wait.”

The Vegetarian Wok was my first experience with “mock” meats. I had just started down the road of vegetarianism and was looking into exploring some new local restaurants. I had located the address of the restaurant which I had jotted down from the phone book.

They now have a new location, but when I walked in their original building I was dumbfounded. I was staring at a Korean BBQ Restaurant. What I didn’t know was that there were 2 restaurants in the same building and the Vegetarian Wok seemed to be tucked to the left side with a hidden entrance.

When I opened up the menu, I had doubts I was in a Vegetarian Restaurant. It looked like a regular Chinese Food Menu. There were items like General Tso’s Chicken & Beef and Broccoli. I was put at ease by a Buddhist Monk who was also dining there for lunch. He assured me that everything was fake meat and it was very tasty.

I was pleasantly surprised, and the Vegetarian Wok soon became one of my favorite restaurants to dine at with family and friends.

They are now located in a shopping center on the ground floor in the corner adjacent to a yummy Asian bakery. They have plenty of tables and a friendly staff. If you’re looking for a bargain, visit them during the weekdays and take advantage of their great lunch specials.

Be sure to order the Fried Chicken Tenders & the General Tso’s Chicken. The bread is also really tasty. It comes fried or steamed. I recommend trying both to decide which one you prefer.

When planning a visit to the Vegetarian Wok, be aware that they close between the hours of 3pm-5pm.

Interior Of Cinnamon Vegetarian RestaurantCinnamon is a wonderful vegetarian restaurant in Highland Park, (Los Angeles). It has a Mexican flair that does honors to our neighbors to the south. I’ve always thought that “Vegetarian Mexican Food” was an oxymoron, but Cinnamon does a fantastic job of putting that thought to rest. If you’re in a hurry, make sure to call in your order ahead of time. When you have time, Cinnamon Vegetarian Restaurant is a great place for a leisurely meal. It’s a great space to hang out, and the many times I have been there, people take time to enjoy their meals.

Exterior Of Cinnamon Vegetarian RestaurantWhen you visit Cinnamon Restaurant, be sure to try the vegetarian carnitas either on a sope or in a burrito. The cheese enchiladas are also very tasty. (I usually order these as an appetizer).

Everything on the menu is vegetarian. Many of my omnivorous friends are pleasantly surprised by the authentic flavors and savory dishes. Cinnamon Restaurant is very vegan friendly. Just let your server know and they’ll make suggestions and/or alterations to your order to suit your needs.

Many years ago, my best friend Rachel introduced me to her friend Molly. Soon after, I met her soon-to-be husband David Anderson. David is a great guy and a wonderful chef. When I first met him, he was the head chef at a wonderful restaurant in Santa Monica & Molly was the manager there as well..

David & Molly left that restaurant to open their very own place in Tarzana (in the San Fernando Valley) called, Madeleine Bistro.

David is actually more of an artist than a chef. What he can do with food is simply amazing. I have to admit, I really don’t like vegetables very much, but David makes them taste great! I don’t know what he does to them, but mix vegetables with his craft and you’re in for one heck of a meal.

I’ve been blessed to be invited to celebrate Thanksgiving with David, Molly & their family. I have to admit, I never knew a vegetarian could have such savory dishes for a Thanksgiving Meal. I didn’t even miss the turkey & stuffing from my childhood.

Flourless Chocolate CakeIf you have a sweet tooth, (like I do), then visit Madeleine Bistro for a wonderful treat. I think Dave is best known for his vegan desserts. My mother is a hard core chocoholic and very hard to please. She has given 2 thumbs up for David’s famous Flourless Chocolate Cake. All of his desserts are tasty. These sweets may be vegan, but they leave you wanting for nothing, but more room in your tummy for an extra bite.

I suggest whatever daily special they are featuring at Madeleine Bistro. It’s sure to be delightful. David is a genius and Molly will make you feel right at home in their beautifully decorated restaurant. This is definitely a great place to celebrate with your close friends or that special someone.

Everything on the menu is Vegan and über scrumptious. The Anderson’s have created a wonderful environment for fine dining and raised the bar for gourmet (and especially vegetarian) splendor.
